The Mars Volta

If you don't know who these guys are, find out! Music has been Boring for a while, now, finally, some bands are doing some interesting stuff. And these guys are right there at the top.

The way Music works, historically speaking, is interesting to me. It seems like every so many years we get a resurgence in complex music, like this new prog scene. From system of a down, and the Mars Volta, to Leftover Crack and Y.O.G. There is progressive death metal, progressive rock, prog prog prog, I love it. But it is a result of years of simple 3 cord rock. It goes this way because it is always too much of one or the other. Never any balance. The Best groups set the trends that all the other bands copy until the market is so saturated that it all becomes assembly line cookie cutter crap until the next group comes that sets the next trend that starts the cycle over again. This all have an overall back and forth, for example, the heavy metal and rock bands that grew in popularity in the 90's were a backlash from the new wave and pop bands that were so popular in the 80's. The 70's a result of the 60's and so on. Here is my favorite specific example, the 60's were actually a pretty hardcore time, the music was changing, there were riots in the street, everyone was on drugs and proud of it. It was so crazy and intense that when the 70's hit, bands like the Carpenters and Bread were very popular, people just wanted to relax. And some just wanted to have fun, and not think about stuff, hence disco. However, there were still people who wanted to hear some good old rock and roll, therefore, KISS and AC/DC became MEGA POPULAR. Led Zeppelin was still around and there were a LOT of great rock bands, but those two specifically, were a direct result of the music around them, there were the opposite in many ways, and the trigger to Punk. BUT that's a whole nother post all together.

SO WHATS THE POINT? Buy The Mars Volta Records!
